He Lord Jim book to name things, and is often reduced to wondering if there even is a meaning to Jim's story and his fascination with it. After being captured by a Spanish patrol boat, he was able to escape with a bribe. For his leadership, the people call him "tuan Jim", or Lord Jim. The Patna incident haunts him, though; each time it is mentioned, Jim flees his current situation, enlisting Marlow's help once again. Words are constantly being contested in this novel; at least three major episodes center around the misinterpretation of a single spoken word. Jim becomes more animated in his story trying to justify his actions by telling Marlow how he was abused by the rest of the crew to get in the lifeboats before the oncoming squall hit.

The Patna does not sink, however, and Jim, along with the rest of the officers, is subjected to an official inquiry by his fellow seamen. He unsuccessfully pleads with Marlow to convince Jim that he can find a new and satisfying life for himself as an overseer on the guano island. In the excitement, the third engineer drops dead of a heart attack. Cornelius sees his chance to get rid of Jim.

It is he who carries Jim's silver Lord Jim book to Dain Waris as a sign that they can trust Brown to leave Patusan peacefully. Finally, his chance comes. He becomes an ally to Jim. On board ship, Jim quickly rises up in the ranks. She is not as trusting of people as Jim is, and she is quick to anger when Jim is threatened. Finally, with the help of Stein, an expatriate trader, Marlow gets Jim situated as post manager in the remote territory of Patusan.

An official inquiry followed, as it does in the novel. As he lay on his back, he felt pleased that he didn't have to be on deck during the storm. But, the two men that are plotting against Jim make a deal with the pirate.

By manipulating the flow of the narrative, Marlow is able to create juxtapositions and contrasts that highlight particular aspects of the story.

Marlow later learns that at that same time, the Putna was being towed by a French Lord Jim book. He is still young and untried on the sea. On leaving, Brown orders a vengeful attack on Patusan's defenders, killing Dain Waris, which leads to the end of Jim's Lord Jim book. He is serving aboard Lord Jim book vessel called the Patna, carrying Muslim pilgrims to Mecca, when the ship strikes an underwater object and springs a leak.

After thinking it over for something like sixteen years, I am not so sure about that. Finally, with the return of his health, Jim signs onto the Patna. But suddenly, Jim disappeared.

Cornelius is to go to Brown and offer him a deal if he kills Jim. He intended to plunder the settlement and supply his ship for a voyage to Madagascar. So he left home and went to sea. His best friend, Dain Waris tries to bring the natives together against the pirate.

He has also been stealing from the trading post. Jim thinks he will still have the chance to become a hero. Stein also gave Jim a silver ring, a symbol of eternal friendship between Stein and Doramin, chief of the Bugis Malays in Patusan. Reality intruded into Jim's dreams, however, when he failed his first test of courage.
